Saying No (Without Burning Bridges)
As a business owner, you’ll encounter situations where you need to say no, whether it’s declining a project that doesn’t align with your goals or turning down an unfi t client. The trick is to say no gracefully, while still maintaining positive relationships.
1. Be Direct and Honest
The best way to say no is with honesty and clarity. Be straightforward about your reasons for turning down the request, but keep it polite and professional.
Tip: “Thank you so much for thinking of me! Unfortunately, this project doesn’t align with my current goals/availability.”
2. Offer Alternatives
If possible, try offering an alternative solution. For example, refer them to a trusted colleague or suggest a different approach that fi ts your business better.
Tip: “While I’m unable to take on this project, I’d recommend [other business] who may be a better fit.”
3. Maintain a Positive Tone
Even when declining, stay positive and respectful. Saying no doesn’t mean you’re burning bridges, it just means you’re prioritising what’s right for your business at the moment.
Tip: Always express gratitude for the opportunity and keep the door open for future collaborations or projects.
